Department of Social Studies

BRIEF HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Social Studies was established in 1987/88 academic year with the cancellation of history and geography courses. Lecture teaching history and geography were deployed to the department. This situation continued briefly until 1990 when all trained in social studies began to teach in the department. The student’s population remained relatively low until PRE-NCE students started taking courses in the department. The population grew steadily until 2003/04 academic year when the population reached 1440.

The same lecture rooms have been used for years but more benches have been added. Facilities in staff office are fairly improved, students’ performance in examination have not quite improved largely because of their poor academic background. Courses have been modified and new ones added. The minimum standard has been revised into the 12 edition with reference to the National Commission for Colleges of Education, Abuja (NCCE).

A new departmental resource centre was constructed in 2013 with a geographical garden installed while old weather instruments have been replaced with new ones.

Currently the Head of Department office is now housed in the new School of Arts and Social Sciences built in 2013.

Since the inception of the Department, the following lecturers have been Heads of Department at one time or the other:
