Home Economics Department

Department of Home Economics

BRIEF HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT

Home Economics Department was established in the year 1996 June by Prof.Aliyu Abdul with three female academic staff and two female non-academic staff. The department took off as a catering unit for three months before the first set of students came in August, ten sandwich students opened up the department to the state and other states in Nigeria. The next regular students were admitted for the 96/97 session 35 students were enrolled. Since then there has been a regular increase in students’ enrolment for Home Economics department. The department have graduated on regular basis about ¾ of the students at the end of each session.

The department started with a borrowed three separate rooms. However, when the college staff school was moved to their present permanent site, the unit occupied by them was allocated to Home economics department as a temporary department complex. It is a thing of joy to see that at last the permanent Home Economics Department complex is under construction to be occupied this year.

As the student population increases, the need to increase staff strength became very necessary because of the vocational nature of the course content of the department. Therefore, in the year 1999 addition two academic staff was added to the department. And in the year 2000, another staff was employed making a six academic year. But there was pressure of excess work load due to the practical nature of the course and the explosion of student population there was demand for additional academic staff to actualise the vocational nature of Home Economics felt by the student and the college environment. Thus between the year 2002 to 2007 more academic staff has been added to bring the total academic staff to eleven and the non-academic to six.
