Dr. Umar Hassan is a seasoned researcher and erudite scholar of international repute, who was until his appointment a Chief Lecturer in the Department of Physical and Health Education, Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto. He holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Health Education.

Biography

Born on 20 April, 1961 in Gusau, Dr. Umar Hassan had his early Education at S.M.I primary school, Gusau from 1967 – 1973. He was at College of Education, Sokoto between 1978 – 1981. He obtained his Bachelor of Education degree in Physical and Health Education in 1984 from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, where he attended from 1982 – 1984.

Subsequently, in 1988 – 1990, he was at University of Ibadan, where he bagged his masters’ degree in Exercise Physiology. Desirous for excellence in his educational pursuit, Dr. Umar made a comeback to Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, betweem 1994 – 2000 where he bagged his Doctor of Philosophy degree in Health Education in 2000.

By dint of hard work, exemplary professional conduct as a teacher, Dr. Umar rose through the ranks as an Assistant lecturer in 1986 to Chief lecturer in 2005. In the process, and at different times, he headed various positions of high responsibilities, among which include; Heads of Department of Physical and Health Education, Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto in 1999 – 2001, Dean, School of Sciences 2001 – 2010, Member, Committee of Deans and Directors, 2005 – 2010, Secretary, Committee of Deans and Directors, 2005 – 2010, Member, College Senior Staff Appointment and Promotion Committee, 2001 – 2010, Chairman, Academic Boards Ad hoc Committee on Harmonization of Academic Calendar 2005 – 2006, and College Desk Officer on HIV/AIDs programme 2004 – 2006. He was also a member, College Governing Council 2010 – 2012, UNICEF Focal Point Person. 2010 – 2017, Northern Nigeria Education Initiative (NEI) Focal Point Person, among others.

He has to his credit several publications, and numerous seminar papers. He has also presented over twenty (20) conferences and workshop papers, with research output in some other critical areas of both primary and basic education in Sokoto, Katsina and Niger States.

Dr. Umar is a member of numerous professional bodies including; Nigerian Association of Health Education, Recreation, Sports and Dance (NAPHER –SD), Nigerian Association of Physical Health Educator (NAHE), Nigeria Archery Federation, Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria, among others.

Dr. Umar Hassan hails from Badoko, in Okene Local Government Area of Kogi State. As a sports Manager and consummate health educator, his area of interest include; Squash, Badminton, Table Tennis, Swimming and Archery. He is happily married and blessed with lovely children.
